Starting Epic Armageddon – with Dark Eldar

Inspired by some articles on Epic Addiction some years ago (?), I would like to spread some posts about getting started with different armies and costs linked to a buy in / initial purchases.

Therefore I am going to create some more balanced lists for all races in Epic Armageddon, providing links to proxies and summing up the estimated costs for 3K tournament ready armies. Obviously I am not en expert with all the different armies and lists out there, but I will try to make some general balanced lists as a starting point.

As the Dark Eldar are my current project, todays first post will deal with the question, how and where to get these guys to build up a formidable playable force. Here is the list:

DARK ELDAR 3000 points army list

FIGHTER FORMATION [200]
2 Raven Fighter

FIGHTER FORMATION [200]
2 Raven Fighter

TORTURE CLASS CRUISER [300]

KABAL SYNDICATE [200]
6 Warriors, 3 Raider

KABAL SYNDICATE [225]
6 Warriors, 3 Raider, Sybarite

KABAL COTERIE [700]
4 Incubi, Archon, 2 Warriors, Ravager, 2 Barge of Pleasure

KABAL FLOTILLA [250]
4 Ravagers

KABAL FLOTILLA [250]
4 Ravagers

REAVER GANG [200]
6 Reavers

REAVER GANG [200]
6 Reavers

SCOURGE FLIGHT [225]
6 Scourges

WEBWAY PORTAL [50]

The army is based on a strong Coterie, able to lead crushing engagements, air superiority fighters and a spaceship to thin out horde armies and pinpoint the most harassing enemy war engines. Flotillas, set up via webway portal will provide crucial fire support, where as the jetbikes are amazingly fast to threat the enemy home base. The scourge deliver a teleport option and potent firefight abilities, whereas the Syndicates are your cheap backbone for any kind of task. The list lacks TK abilities aside of the two lance shots, but powerful engagements or evading enemy Warlords etc. should still provide decent performance on the battlefield. If there is still an inherit desire for some larger guns, the scourge and Sybarite upgrade could get swapped with a Vessel of Pain. At some point one might want to get some Hellions to get a scout unit into the list, but that depends on a personal play stile and favour I guess.

Now what do you need to buy? Considering that templates dice etc. are the same as in Warhammer 40k and therefore easy accessible, or most likely existing and free rules and army lists can be found on net-armageddon.org it really comes down to the miniatures themselves (30.09.2015):

DARK ELDAR proxy / shopping list

FIGHTER FORMATIONS – 4 Raven Fighter

– scratches from GW DE Jetbikes (24£)

TORTURE CLASS CRUISER

– scratches from GW DE Jetbikes (0£)

stygian-phantom-barge stygian-hunters

KABAL SYNDICATES – 12 Warriors, 6 Raider

– Onslaught Stygian Hunters and Phantom Barge (28,90£)

KABAL COTERIE –  4 Incubi, 2 Warriors, Ravager, 2 Barge of Pleasure

– Barges scratched from Jetbike box, warriors from Hunters above, Ravager from Flotillas (Onslaught), Stygian Phantom Guard for Incubi (5,46£)
KABAL FLOTILLAS – 8 Ravagers

– Stygian Revenant gun barge (26,97£)

stygian-ghast-ac

REAVER GANGS – 12 Reavers

Stygian Ghast AC (10,92£)

stygian-gargoyles

SCOURGE FLIGHT – 6 Scourges

  • Stygian Gargoyles (5,46£)

WEBWAY PORTAL [50]

– use what is left from the Jetbike kit. (0£)

bases

BASES – Rundbases von Troublemaker

– 80 round bases for 6mm miniatures (10£)

As you can see, the total cost will be roughly 139£ or 188€, so it comes in fairly cheap for a full playable force. For my calculation I assumed 3 Infanterists per base instead of five. This way you can save some money and the bases look filled but not overly cluttered up with infantry to leave some space for interesting base designs. Having had a look on recent price development, I did some sample armies for Dropzone Commander and Warhammer 40K, ending up with starting costs of roughly 400£ for 40k and around 240£ for playable forces – that aside, Epic is the space friendliest game out there – trust me 😉

Tutorials / guidance videos on how to scratch war engines and flyers can be found here on my blog, and on my Youtube channel.

Cheers 🙂
